Play simple and solid and folks will generally think you are a great drummer. The critics might say that you "can't play anything complicated" but if you never try to play the complicated stuff during a gig, nobody will know that you cannot play the complicated stuff.
Abraham Lincoln is credited with saying "Better to be silent and thought a fool, than to speak and remove all doubt" Translated to drums I believe this means – It's better to play really solid on something simple than to play poorly because you are trying to be too fancy.
